CRRES affiliate Dr. Alisha Jones wons two awards from the American Music Society for her book, Flaming? The Peculiar Theo-politics of Fire and Desire in Black Male Gospel Performance. She won The Music in American Culture Award, which honors books of exceptional merit that illuminate an important aspect of the music of the United States and place that music in a rich cultural context, and The Phillip Brett Award, which honors exceptional musicological work in the field of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender/transsexual studies. Her book explores how gospel music and performance can provide African American men with not just more exposure, but also validation of their ability to minister through speech and song.
