CRRES Director Dina Okamoto Shares Findings from Research on Immigrant Protests

Tuesday, October 27, 2020

CRRES Director Dina Okamoto, along with Helge-Johannes Marahrens and Dr. Emily Meanwell, wrote a blog post that draws connections between their recent work on immigrant protests and the 2020 election. In “Immigrant Protests: Why It Matters for the 2020 Election,” Okamoto notes the importance of considering political participation beyond voting. Based on data collected on immigrant protest events from 2015 to 2020, they identify five periods of increased activity, and place these in the context of events and political rhetoric at the time.

This blog was part of the University of Michigan National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) series, "Immigration, Voter Suppression, and Political Engagement in the 2020 Election."

We cannot understand immigrant voter turnout without understanding the collective action — powerful and emergent — that has taken place on the ground and across the nation over the past five years.
