When the U.S. federal government released a series of grants under the Model Cities Program in 1967, Los Angeles residents were shocked that their city did not receive funding. In the three years leading up to Model Cities, Black and Brown Angelenos effectively closed the gap between residents, activists, and government officials through their advocacy for civil rights and economic justice. This talk will examine the impact of the Chicano Movement on the Model Cities Program in Los Angeles to demonstrate how Brown and Black Los Angeles utilized government programs to meet social justice priorities during the 1960s.
